5 Simple, Sensual Self Care Tips

Body

In a world intent on disconnecting you from your body and your inner truth, reconnecting and reestablishing that trust is one of the most radical acts of resistance. One way to do that is through sensual self-care.

Our bodies keep the score. They carry so much intergenerational wisdom, and they also hold stress, trauma, and a record of our negative experiences and emotions, which can eventually manifest into physical and psychological ailments.

To release and heal, we need to practice self-care. This form of mindfulness is a beautiful reminder of your body’s innate ability to experience pleasure and of the fact that it belongs to only you.

Here are some ways to practice sensual self-care.

1. Embrace yourself.

We often hug our loved ones, but what about the person most worthy of your love: you? Wrap your arms around yourself and simply hold on tight for at least 20 seconds to get your happy hormones flowing. It’s great—trust us.

2. Stretch.

Stretching is a great way to release tension. Instead of disconnecting by watching TV or being on your phone while you do this, pay attention to what you’re experiencing. How does a small change in angle create different sensations? Do these stretches feel the same on your right and your left or are you tighter on one side? What stretches is your body craving?

3. Massage your body.

Connecting to your body through mindful touch is a powerful way to work through trauma. You might need to start slowly and work your way to places that hold more tension eventually. Do this with kindness and compassion for your body.

4. Name your sensations.

Lie down, close your eyes, and listen to the sensations of your body. Which part is experiencing tingling, numbness, warmth, or coolness? Where are you recognizing emotions like pain or fear or happiness? The point of this exercise is just to learn to listen to what your body is saying.

5. Practice mindful self-pleasure.

Instead of a quickie, spend some one-on-one quality time with yourself. To practice mindful self-pleasure, set some time aside so that you’re not rushed or worried about being interrupted. Focus on the sensations and tune into what your body is telling you, rather than how you think you should be feeling. Experiment with breath, movement, and maybe even new sensations with the addition of a lube or an intimacy product.

A Final Note

Taking care of your body goes beyond mere physical care; it extends to acknowledging its sensual needs and constantly listening to what it’s trying to communicate to you.
