Have you ever experienced so much tension in your vagina that penetration was difficult, or even impossible? Have you struggled with inserting a tampon, no matter how hard you tried? Is sex so painful that you go to great lengths to avoid it? If what we’re describing sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you may be experiencing a condition known as vaginismus. It manifests as an automatic, uncontrollable tightening of the vaginal muscles that prevent penetration (sexual or otherwise).
Vaginismus is common in the Middle East and North Africa due largely to the cultural perception of sex. Unsurprisingly, many studies have shown that insufficient sexual knowledge is a major contributor to developing vaginismus.
With that in mind, we asked our guest expert Zina Malas to break down this condition and hopefully help lead you towards a path of healing.
